About Us
PFHC officially began in the fall of 2008, as a means for our founder, Amy, to continue playing the sport she loves with other like-minded women. When the first session ended, our co-organizer, Michelle, offered to help organize the next one. They have been running pick-up games in and around Portland, Maine, nearly every week since. Players of various ages, fitness and skill levels, and years away from the game have been welcome since day one.
Club Rules & Philosophy
Our goal is for everyone to have fun while getting a decent workout. To reach it, we have a few basic rules.
- Pass often and indiscriminately. No one likes a ball hog. Pass to the open player, not the best player.
- Play only one position. Try not to drift into other players’ space. Stay spread out so everyone can play.
- Roll with it. Don't argue calls. This is for fun, not Olympic glory. We don't even keep score.
- Stop playing if someone gets hurt. And, yes, someone probably will. Sticks and balls are hard.
- If you’re on the game list, show up. It’s bad form to no-show. Update your RSVP if you have to drop out.
- Join us for off-field shenanigans. More of a suggestion than a rule, but it is a social group, after all.

P.S.
We are not the only game in town. If a faster, somewhat younger, and more competitive atmosphere is more your speed, then you may want to check out the other field hockey group in Portland - the one without "Club" in their name or URL. |
